Similar to how life has milestone moments, you are supposed to take-in and really appreciate, dessert is also meant to be part of our lives. We are supposed to enjoy the sweet stuff, and the thing is–you can.
So many diets are restrictive, or only let you have the cookie as your cheat meal, but that has some serious implications for our relationship with food.
If you are eating whole foods, and know every ingredient you are putting into your body, and 90% of the meals you are having are made at home, dessert shouldn't be something you skip or feel bad about having. When the majority of your meals are comprised of wholesome ingredients, dessert is the treat you deserve.
Desserts should also be made of wonderful ingredients just like your traditional meals. Don't waste an afternoon treat on a prepackaged good that has ingredients you cannot pronounce. Not only will you be eating cleaner, but you will also be staying away from products made from the overproduction of subsidized goods transformed into crazy unhealthy products from large agriculture, but also will cut back on plastic packaging. So really, eating a dessert that you made, or got from a unique, local vendor who uses quality products, is a win for your health, and the planet.
Sweet eats should be accompanied by good memories, so make them with a loved one, share them with a friend, or drop some off at a neighbor's house. I strongly believe when our relationship with food is surrounded by positive memories, such as laughing in the kitchen, or measuring baking powder with a toddler, we not only get to enjoy the treat later that day, but always get to cherish the memory we made while creating it.
Food has long been my love language (my husband's is creating parody songs about our beloved pup), so I bake a lot, and I cook even more. This weekend I made a three-layer strawberry swirl, buttermilk cake topped lavishly with a roasted hazlenut, chocolate cream frosting and fresh berries. We shared a big slice on Sunday night and some of it will be boxed up for some upcoming birthdays in the next couple weeks (don't worry I will freeze it).
Eat dessert. Maybe it is a few chocolate chips heading out the door, or a peach cobbler on a summer night. If you are eating whole ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you should have some dessert, you deserve it, just like you deserve life's sweetest moments. Have the slice of cake...
This cake is everything, message me for the recipe! :)
